PK-12 to college and career, Meriwether prepares students for tomorrow

PK-12: Pathways to performance in a county and state committed to academic and life success. When Georgia leaped to the forefront in the national Race to the Top, the result was a clear win for state students: $4 billion distributed throughout the Georgia system, which is also proceeding full speed ahead in implementing Common Core standards in collaboration with Georgia Performance Standards.

Here in Meriwether, our schools are also on the move, rising to meet global standards of readiness to insure that today’s students enjoy tomorrow’s bright future. In our public system, we’ve invested wisely to enhance technology infrastructure and promote best-in-class instruction. 100% of our certified staff are considered Highly Qualified to teach in their academic areas; over half of our teachers have earned Master’s degrees or higher. Rising test scores show we’re reaching improved benchmarks in Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) and End of Course Tests (ECT). As just one example from 2010 85% of students met or exceeded standards on the Georgia High School Writing Test (GHSWT); in 2012, the percentage rose to 92.

Our goal and our promise: College or career-readiness for all students by high school graduation, a commitment we’re realizing through world-class instruction and to expanded career pathways, including the choice of dual enrollment at West Georgia Technical College.

West Georgia Technical College: The future is Golden with a key asset for industrial success, critical resource for individual advancement. Startups for Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia and its tiered suppliers have revealed a local labor force revved up and ready thanks to Georgia’s globally renowned Quick Start program, working in conjunction with West Georgia Tech, the agency’s trusted local training partner. And just as global manufacturers like Kia have found West Georgia Tech invaluable for productivity, area residents recognize the school as a powerful vehicle for personal and professional success. The school offers 40 academic fields of study and 110 certificate, diploma and associate degree programs for technical careers as well as skilled trades, and in the fields of business, healthcare and public service. Learning takes place on campuses across three cities (offering dual enrollment opportunities for students at Meriwether County high schools), as well as online. And on the athletic field, West Georgia Tech offers plenty of action on the men’s and women’s Golden Knights teams.

HIGHER EDUCATION: Over a dozen colleges within a 2.5-hour drive.
